On the Record: With Jason Vaughn

KD:  Answer only what you feel comfortable.  It may get a little deep. Considering your show was called, Space and the Human Condition, I've got a few questions about the "humans" at your show.  Did you know any of the people at your show?

JV:   I did know a lot of people at my show.  A lot of them were work associates and they all brought 2-3 friends which made it fill up quick.   Plus I had some friends come from as far away as the Bay Area to the show. So it was like 50% were people I knew, 50% not.

KD:  What kind of reaction did you receive from those you didn't know?

JV:  Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to talk to many people I didn't know. It was mainly people who I did know telling me what their friends thought the night went really quickly, which was a good thing!

Most people seemed to be really moved by the show. I think adding all the elements to enhance each section turned out really well and kept people’s attention through out the show. Personally I get bored extremely fast at most art shows so I feel if I can keep my own attention, I’m doing ok.
So it seems like people were impressed with that on top of having the band play also which added another element to the show.

KD:  Do you ever deal with people that you would rather not deal with?

JV:   All the time, I hate socializing to be honest. I almost would rather never make a living as an artist if I had to schmooze with people. I'm more of an animal person, and I have a few close friends which all have very distinct personalities that some how mesh with mine.

KD:  I've visited your website a few times, Nice!  I like the cleanliness.  No clutter, no drama, just art.  It also doesn't have ads.
I asked a couple (male/female) what they thought of your work (at the show.)  The guy said he knew you very well.  He took me to a piece he said was "beautiful."  I was hoping to get some comments on why he thought that.  But all he said was, "It's only $300."

JV:   Which piece was it?

KD:  What was the show's purpose ?  Did you accomplish your goal?

JV:  I had been doing a lot of group shows in the area which I feel are more of a party than an art show. Plus I get bored at them and sometimes hate the fact I have a piece in them. Plus I feel like I can strive more when I can add more elements and ways of displaying my art. And I can't accomplish that at group shows, so I said it, I’m renting a space to do my own thing.
At first it was a huge cluster of all of my photos which visually looked cool but had no meaning behind it. So my girlfriend and I came up with a more interesting, deeper way of combining certain photos and elements. Normally I hate having deeper meanings behind things, but when it was all put together it really made sense and visually looked much better.

KD:  Finally, I've mentioned a couple or pieces already but these are the pieces that impacted me the most. (Sorry if I don't remember their names.)  The radios under Buddy had an old pair of Levi's on top of them.  That was a bold statement about what?  Did anyone else seem to notice?

JV:   I don't think anyone else noticed them, and they weren't picked specifically because they were Levis. It was more to emphasize the Buddy photo which had a sort of confidence and looked over the whole exhibit with a subtle fatherly way.

So I used the radios and other things from the neighborhood to signify a long, hard life.

KD: The portrait of the girl on the floor had something about the Virgin Mary written over her head.  What were those words?  Was Buddy's reflection meant to be three-dimensional?  I don't know about a lot of people there, but in my condition, it tripped me out.

JV:  The words were written on the trees on the section with Mary and the girl. It said "Useless" because all the photos in that section had the theme of being baron and I guess some what useless.

JV:   Which buddy piece are you talking about?

KD:  The last piece I'd like to discuss is on your wall of artists.  I crouched down to get a better look at one of the pieces near the floor.  When I got there, I noticed that it was the piece that was taking a look at me.  How were you able to make your audience the exhibit to you art?

JV:   I don't really get what you're saying, sorry. What do you mean exactly??

If you want to further explain a few of these I will answer them plus anything else you would like to know.

Thanks man

Jason
