Mr. E and the mystery of Kinetics, Direct from his living room.
“100% or real sense is kinetic energy.” Resident engineer Ricardo said. “Everyday, if you don’t know, every time you eat or lift a finger, it's kinetic and potential energy at work.”
It has come to my attention that many Kinetics Direct readers still do not know what kinetics (derived from kinetic energy or kinematic Motion) means or what Kinetics Direct is about. I hope this can clear the smoky confusion.
We began this conversation outside of the 4100 Bar in Hollywood a few weeks before. We were having a smoke break when I began my questioning.
KD: What are the formulas that you need to do your job?
Ricardo: Well, there really aren’t a set of formulas that we necessarily use.
KD: Then just tell me a formula that you remember off the top of your head.
Ricardo: Let’s see formula, formula. Oh, I got one for you, (1/2) x M x V squared.
That is the formula for, kinetic energy.
I took a drag from my cigarette and pleaded him to please continue. He pulled a pen from who knows where and raised it above his shoulders.
Ricardo: Alright, the amount of energy I used to raise this pen is the same amount of energy the pen is going to use on the way down if you let it go. The energy it took to raise the pen is called “work” and the more “work” you put into something, i.e. the higher you raise the pen, the more “potential energy” the pen has…this of course due to gravity acting to pull it down. Energy can neither be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred.
The formula uses Mass motion (M) and velocity (V) to measure the amount of kinetic energy exerted. In other words, kinetic energy is movement.
Now, many miles away from the cold Hollywood night, we sat on suede and spoke and continued our conversation and activity. Ricardo was at ease while we spoke of kinetics and its dynamic energy.
He actually dug an old college book out and let me borrow it to better understand the subject. The book is Physics with Calculus by Craig Fletcher.
I asked him to estimate how much of our daily lives revolve around kinetic energy.
“Everything!” He said. “From the moment you open you eyes in the morning to the moment you fall asleep at night. It’s all kinetic energy.”
Everything we publish comes “Direct” and accurate from live events and locations for your knowledge and enjoyment.
Some days we write from cozy engineer abodes, while other days we’ll write from a bar or the home of a person with something to say strong enough to impacts who we are and where we are going.
Stay tuned for more Kinetics Direct coming your way.
Thank you for reading.
