Kinetics Direct from Johnnie’s Coffee Shop in Bell CA. It was a Friday around 6 pm.
What does art mean to you? What do you see in the art?
<She was referring to Vaughn’s portraits.>
Well first of all art to me has to create thought. This specific art, aside from thought, inspires and moves me. It inspires me to do more, write, create, draw and even destroy. What do you call art?
Art is...art needs to meet certain criteria in order to be called art.
“Criteria?”
Yeah.
What criteria and where do they come from?
A book I read. I read it in a book.
What book?
James Joyce: Portrait of an Artist.
So what are the criteria?
<KD didn’t have a pen or paper in hand. The situation and other thoughts were a distraction. This is what was recorded.>
Fullness, harmony and it has to leave you in state of arrest with no particular topic for its appreciation. It’s not supposed to move you. I think pornography is supposed to move you.
<She had a phone call.>
Do you mind?
Go ahead.
<I never mind.>
I’m right here at Johnnie’s…yeah Johnnie’s…something like that…it’s not important.
<That was the first sign of a poorly conceived attempt to score with my best friend’s ex-girlfriend.>
