My brother and I went out to Hollywood in search of “There Will Be Blood.” The Arclight serves wine but does not allow late arrivals, so we took our bow and kept the search alive.
Driving around Sunset was not my idea of “watching a movie,” but my brother is extremely fond of watching movies in Hollywood. I had to take it.
There we were, hours after my suggestion, miles away from my cozy neighboring AMC, Edwards and Krikorian, with 411 on the line.
We finally made a 9 or so o’clock show at…
AMC Norwalk 20.

I went in looking for blood, “a la Gangs of New York,” but came out with a different impression of the “The Butcher.” The blood was work, thought and business.
The kind of business it takes to pump oil, pump oil in Signal Hill before Long Beach ever existed.
The kind of talk it takes a man to buy a town, to manipulate earth, to take what time he put in solitude digging for oil to the test.
He did a lot of talking and had me almost convinced.
I take that back. I was convinced. |
